Boeing MD-80 (S80) story Initially, the
Super 80 was officially the Douglas DC9 Super 80. Once Douglas aircraft names tranistioned to McDonnell Douglas, my guess is that this model continued to be produced as the MD-80, with later versions such as -83, -88, -90. Now it seems that AA uses MD80 and S80 interchangably whenever they are speaking of their narrrow body MD aircraft. One has to assume that some of these aircraft were produced under the MD banner, but some may be old enough to be legitimate DC9 Super 80's.
